The Bernalillo Community Garden was built in June 2023, and was initially funded through a $5,000 grant from the Lavendar in the Village Foundation. The grant proposal and garden plan were designed by AmeriCorps VISTA member, Nikoma Henkles during her first year with the museum. Additional resources for the development of the project were added through generous donations from our partner organizations including Soilutions, Wholesale Timber & Viga, Plants of the Southwest, Jericho Nursery, and Santa Ana Pueblo. These contributions allowed museum staff to plant over 160 plants, and dozens of seed varieties.
Museum staff worked closely with the Town of Bernalillo staff and Sandoval Master Gardeners to create a functional, educational, and accessible environment that is open to all community members. Most plants in the garden are native to the Southwest, and the garden was developed with water sustainability in mind. The Bernalillo Community Garden consists of four large garden beds, a spiral herb garden, a waffle garden, and raised row gardens.
