As a community museum, our primary goals are to provide cultural, social, and economic benefits to our neighbors. All of our exhibits are developed through community curation, and we work closely with local organizations to provide enriching educational opportunities and community-based activities. We offer workforce training in cultural sector occupations, provide economic development support and collaborative opportunities to residents in surrounding communities.
BCM Mission
Launched in July of 2019, the Bernalillo Community Museum is a municipal museum that:
- leverages the power of local history and traditions to build local capacity,
- invests in the area’s multivocality, and
- energizes civic engagement.
We serve families from 500-year-old Hispanic villages and sovereign Pueblo communities located between Albuquerque and Santa Fe. Museum exhibits capture large themes of community relevance, change regularly, and provide a platform for local conversations on policy-relevant issues.
BCM Values
- Multivocality: we prioritize multiple and underrepresented voices.
- Building Local Capacity: we explicitly offer internship, volunteer, and collaborative opportunities to residents in surrounding communities.
- Community Voices: members of the public add to exhibits after consultation with the museum advisory council.
- Community Gathering Space: community members see the museum as a gathering space to accomplish their own goals.
- Reflection: visitors have a chance to reflect on their past and think about their future, informed by the stories found in our exhibits.
