Everett Fragua: Traditional Jemez Drum Maker

Everett Fragua is a celebrated drum maker in New Mexico. He has mastered the art that was handed down to him by his grandfather and has earned him recognition by the Department of the Interior. We are honored to have him speak about his history and his inspiration for creating these traditional drums. He will share how he chooses each material with care and precision. All his master pieces start by hunting the animal he chooses to use and following a labor-intensive process to properly tan the hide. He also must choose the perfect piece of wood that can withstand the entire drum making process. Each item is custom made according to the customs of the Jemez Pueblo. Come in and join us in learning about this wonderful tradition.
